According to an article in the Guardian, in a survey of 2,000 people only 5% could say when blackberries were at their best, while only one in 10 could pinpoint the perfect season for gooseberries. Well, we’re here to help. Here at Spicers of Hythe we think that eating seasonably is a great thing, giving people produce that tastes as good as possible and usually at the best price. This is why we’ve come up with some of our favourite produce that’s in season during the summer months to help get you inspired.
The warm summer months bring with them an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables for people to enjoy. If you like something sweet, July and August are the perfect months to fill your tummy with tons of fresh seasonal fruits, from apricots and apples to blackberries, blackcurrants and blueberries. Summer is fruit heaven, whether you’re a strawberries and cream fan or simply like to grab a handful of sweet, juicy cherries. For something a bit different, how about grilling your ripe peaches and serving with vanilla ice cream, or using sweet strawberries in a salad tossed with a balsamic glaze. Although, you can’t beat a good old fashioned apple crumble.
Veg is best
When it comes to vegetables you’re equally spoilt for choice during the summer months. Go green with spinach, watercress, broad beans, spring onions and mint for a fresh and fragrant salad to complement some of the season’s best meats, particularly lamb. Fish is another thing to enjoy during the warmer months, when the fruits of the seas come into their own. Sea bass and mackerel are firm summer favourites, and make an excellent choice for an al fresco BBQ, paired with charred peppers, tomatoes and courgettes – also in season. Salmon, tuna and scallops also make fresh, delicious choices and are the perfect dinner companion to share with family and friends, paired with a pea and mangetout medley or some buttery Jersey Royals – at their best in July.
Recipe inspiration is everywhere during the warmer months, from fresh salads and punchy gazpacho to simple summer vegetable soups, steamed vegetables and zingy cultural inspiration from the Mediterranean and Mexico. As a company based in Kent we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to local produce from both land and sea, with famous Romney Marsh lamb and Whitstable oysters as well as orchards ripe with apples and pears. Celebrate the great British countryside and make the most of sourcing produce when it’s at its prime, your tastebuds will thank you for it.
