Keep the children entertained with these weekend Christmas crafts

With the Christmas holidays just around the corner and the excitement of what’s to come building up, it can be difficult to keep some children entertained and in one place for more than 5 minutes! However, Christmas crafts are a great way to keep the Christmas spirit flowing whilst keeping the children amused.

Pasta bow wreath

Materials

  • Pasta bow tie (farfalle)
  • Green paint
  • Green glitter
  • Red ribbon
  • Glue
  • White card
  • Paintbrush

Step by step

  1. Start by painting all pieces of dry pasta with the green paint, cover with the green glitter and leave to dry
  2. Once dry, glue the pasta bows into a circle on the white card
  3. Use the red ribbon to tie a small bow, and stick it on the bottom of the circle to create the perfect festive wreath (top tip – these make for excellent Christmas cards!).

Salt dough ornaments

Materials

  • 250g plain flour
  • 125g table salt
  • 125ml water

Step by step

  • Preheat the oven to its lowest setting and line a baking sheet with greaseproof paper
  • Mix the flour, salt and water in a bowl and stir until it becomes a dough ball
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface, divide into quarters and roll out with a rolling pin into large circles
  • Get your little ones involved here by creating hand or footprints into the salt dough, then add a small hole at the top (enough room to thread the ribbon through) and then bake in the oven on low for 3 hours
  • Once cooked, leave them to cool, thread with ribbon and decorate how you’d like.

Santa puppets

Materials

  • Jumbo lollipop or craft stick
  • Red card
  • White cupcake case
  • Red and white pom poms
  • Cotton wool balls
  • Black thick pen
  • Glue

Step by step

  1. Start by cutting the top of the flattened cupcake case off and cutting a large triangle out of your red card
  2. Glue the cupcake case in the middle of the red triangle, and glue the white pom pom at the top of the triangle to create the bobble of Santa’s hat
  3. Use the cotton wool to create the white fur of Santa’s hat along the top of the cupcake case and glue down
  4. Add a red pom pom to the middle of the cupcake case to make Santa’s nose, and draw two eyes and a moustache on it
  5. Glue your Santa onto a giant lollipop stick and leave to dry before playing with it.

“Thanking you for all your help with the hampers this year. I have had only compliments for the contents. I have been told by a couple of colleagues that this one was actually the best one so far. So thank you very much. Look forward to next christmas as it is only 333 days away lol.”
