Halloween celebrations are looking to be a little different this year with more of us than ever looking to entertain little ones at home with few or no guests – even Trick or Treating may not escape 2020 without adjustments. Fear not Spicers of Hythe are here with some ghoulishly good activities to keep even the most monstrous of fiends entertained this Halloween and half term!
Reverse trick or treating!
Reminiscent of Spring time walks searching for houses bedecked with NHS rainbow decorations, why not venture out on the hunt for windows packed with pumpkin displays or to see if anyone in your neighbourhood has really gone to town with Halloween decorations. To add a little extra incentive and compensate for the lack of the traditional trick or treat hoard, why not smuggle a stash of goodies in your bag and reward the children/you for each decoration found – at least you only need pack treats that you are sure to be enjoyed!
If you’re looking to enjoy the great outdoors and embrace nature this half term, why not add an extra challenge and take along a Scavenger hunt sheet to complete…possibly with the promise of a thermos of hot chocolate at the end as a reward? Our favourite things to look out for are acorn cups, helicopter seeds, something red, something smooth/beautiful/multi-coloured or if you’re looking for more of a challenge, a type of shell (empty?!), something spooky or a 4 leaf clover!
If you’re looking to challenge young minds rather than be left with pockets of carefully selected Autumnal leaves why not create or use some of our treasure hunt clues, a hamper at the end, such as our Chocolate Drop Hamper would make the perfect prize for the whole family or simply choose a favourite treat.
Here are some of our favourite clues,
It rhymes with dread and dead, but tastes best toasted with a little spread…bread bin
Seek if you dare, the next clue is hiding under your oldest/favourite teddy…bear
Don’t be late, if you please, but you don’t leave the house without your…keys
I beg your pardon…check under the pot/play equipment/ table outside in the…garden
Pumpkins are the obvious go-to for pre-Halloween entertainment, whether you’re able to visit a local farm to select your own or pick one up with the weekly shop the decorating options are endless. Look out for the popular white ‘ghost’ ones this year.
If the above sounds a bit too labour intensive for you, or if you’re worn out after completing them all, we can also highly recommend curling up and enjoy a hamper with a movie night. Our Port & Stilton hamper, Afternoon Tea Tray or Santa Surprise goodie bag make the perfect accompaniments to an evening in.
